Zantac case carries on despite ongoing COVID-19 pandemic

For years, Americans were taking the heartburn medication, Zantac. Only years later would they find out that the medication could harm them, potentially causing cancer.

Kelley and Ferraro attorney Nick DiCioccio joined America’s Work Force Union Podcast to explain how their class action lawsuit began, where it is at now and where they hope it ends up when the dust is settled.

What is the case against Zantac?

Recently, the heartburn medication, Zantac has been linked to various forms of cancer. Research has found a chemical in the over-the-counter drug to be the causing factor.

The ingredient is a well-known carcinogen, which is used to cause cancer in lab animals. It is unknown why or how this chemical was put into the medication.

In response to the discovery, all over the counter products that may contain the ingredient have been pulled from shelves.

Multi-district litigation

DiCioccio said his firm collected claims against Zantac from throughout the country. Instead of trying each individual case, the firm opted to put them all together and process them in a single court.

He said the COVID-19 pandemic has caused the litigation process, which is taking place in the Southern District of Florida, to slow. Currently, the case is in the discovery process.

DiCioccio said he has high hopes for the case and believes that it will be bigger than the fight against tobacco companies.
