Anti-union sentiment had a run across the U.S. in recent years, but things are looking up for the labor movement as it gains momentum in the political arenas of multiple midwest states.
Wisconsin Democracy Campaign Executive Director Matt Rothschild is excited for the future of unions and workers in Wisconsin. He discussed a recent statewide election, the progress made by Governor Evers and the political direction of the state on America’s Work Force Union Podcast.
Wisconsin recently held a statewide election for State Superintendent, which was won by the Democratic candidate. While money flowed in from prominent conservatives such as Betsey DeVos, Democrats outraised and outspent the Republican candidate.
Rothschild said Wisconsin is trending towards Democrats. While the legislature is dominated by Republicans, statewide races are being won by Democrats.
Governor Evers and Democratic momentum
Rothschild said Governor Evers has steady support above 50 percent. The people of Wisconsin rejected former Governor Scott Walker, who was fierce against workers rights.
Evers has worked hard for Wisconsin, securing additional funding for public education. This launched statewide support for now President Joe Biden. Rothschild said he saw many more Biden signs than Trump signs, which was not the case during the 2016 election.
