Veterans Affairs Council official discusses safely returning to work

The Department of Veterans Affairs has been greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Hear from National Veterans Affairs Council 262 Sixth District President and American Federation of Government Employees member Willie Haywood Jr. discuss personal protective equipment, returning to work and more on America’s Work Force Union Podcast.

AFGE Day of Action

Haywood first spoke about the successful day of action hosted by the AFGE over the course of Labor Day weekend.

The event gave the chance to AFGE members to learn about political candidates and where they stand on important issues.

Personal Protective Equipment

Haywood then spoke about personal protective equipment and the safety standards and regulations put into place at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now that workers are being welcomed back into their offices and other places of work, there is a feeling of discomfort and uncertainty among workers. He said some workers do not feel safe about returning to work due to the lack of enforcement on new COVID-19 guidelines.

He added that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) needs to do more in terms of enforcing these temporary guidelines and punishing those who disregard them.

Energizing voters

In an effort to energize their members, the AFGE explained that they are endorsing Joe Biden because he will stand up for workers and worker rights in a time when both have been forgotten. He said Biden will work to ensure the safety of workers and lay out a new set of emergency safety standards so workers can feel safe returning to work.

Haywood said it is clear that the workforce has been affected by the pandemic. He added that a vote for Biden will be a vote for workers and protections of workers.

Finally, he discussed the White House directing Federal Agencies to halt some race related training programs.
