With union members at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company being the recent target of a boycott instigated by President Donald Trump, United Steelworkers Local 2L President Jim Mason appeared on the Sept. 21 episode of America’s Work Force Union Podcast to set the record straight.
After reports spread across social media that Goodyear banned employees from wearing the president’s signature “Make America Great Again” campaign hat, the President erupted and called for a boycott of the Akron, Ohio based company.
Goodyear and Mason said it has long been Goodyear policy that employees are not to wear political attire of any kind while in the shop.
Mason said the president’s calls for boycott are damaging to the American economy. Goodyear provides thousands of good paying jobs to Americans in multiple states.
Erosion of labor law
Mason then began talking about labor laws in the United States and how they are being stepped on, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mason said some employers have completely ignored labor laws and have shown complete disregard for emergency standards that have been put in place in order to protect workers. To counter this disregard for worker safety, Mason said employees should band together and unionize.
