University of Pittsburgh faculty vote to join USW in decisive vote

United Steelworkers Organizing Director Maria Somma joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the recent landslide election by University of Pittsburgh employees, as 71 percent voted in favor to form a union.

More than 3,000 employees across all five of the university’s campuses will join the USW and stand to benefit from employment under a Collective Bargaining Agreement. The union includes all full-time and tenured professors, as well as some part-time faculty.

Somma discussed the USW’s decision to represent educational workers. It has struggled to organize numerous educational institutions, including the University of Toronto and Duquesne University. At first, USW leaders felt they would not be the best representatives of educational interests, but ultimately decided to represent campus workers using similar strategies of industrial unionizing by organizing the entire workforce of an institution, Somma said.
