Unions dramatically increase wealth of minority workers

David Madland, a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss a recent report he co-wrote that found unions help close racial wealth gaps, especially for African-American and Hispanic workers.

Based on the 2010–2019 Survey of Consumer Finances data, the report found:

  • The median union household has more than twice the wealth of the median non-union household.
  • African-American households with a union member have median wealth that is more than three times the median wealth of non-union African-American households.
  • Hispanic households with a union member have median wealth that is more than five times the median wealth of non-union Hispanic households.
  • White households with a union member have nearly two times the median wealth of non-union white households.

Essentially, unions provide greater wealth for all families, especially when it comes to minority families, Madland said.
