Union Sportsmen’s Alliance Discusses Safety Programs and Volunteer Opportunities

Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council, Dorsey Hager spoke with America’s Work Force Radio Podcast on July 7 to discuss politics that affect the working person.

Dorsey Hager Columbus Building and Construction Trades CouncilHager first spoke about how strong work is in Central Ohio. He said that all of the trades are working and is excited about the future of work in the area. Hager then spoke about personal protective equipment and how workers are being provided PPE on their job sites to ensure the safety of themselves and those around them. He then spoke about apprenticeship classes resuming with a smaller capacity. Hager added that some apprenticeship training has gone completely online. Furthermore, Hager spoke about the Driving Futures program and how it will help younger people find that a career in the trades is a viable career option.

Hager continued by speaking about the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA). He explained how they raise money to help preserve the land that people use for recreational activity. This includes local parks and state parks where people go to hike, fish, bird watch and enjoy the outdoors. Hager said that the USA works with C/COBCTC to help in volunteer work in repairing and beautifying parks in the area. Finally, he spoke about how different trades fundraise for the USA to help with projects.

Union Sportsmen's AllianceExecutive Director of the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA), Scott Vance spoke about how the organization fared during the COVID-19 pandemic. He explained that during the pandemic, they have practiced social distancing and followed the safety guidelines as closely as possible. Vance then discussed how they were able to keep money coming into the organization by fundraising. They auctioned off high quality hunting and fishing trips, the members also put money back into their organization. Now that the organization is opening back up, he hopes to bring back some of their furloughed workers. Vance then discussed the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) partnership to create safe, responsible firearms owners and hunters. Finally, he spoke about volunteer opportunities with the USA coming up and how people can get involved.
