Union leaders rally behind President on labor reform

Many people in the labor movement feel President Biden is the leader who will bring change for working people. Where others talked a big game, President Biden has put plans in place.

Metal Trades Department President Jimmy Hart was excited about the future of the Biden administration when he joined AWF Union Podcast. He discussed current legislation and what work of the Metal Trades Department.

Who is the Metal Trades Department

The Metal Trades Department is a department within the AFL-CIO, similar to the Transportation Trades Department and others. Hart said they are the advocates for workers in the manufacturing and production industries.

The Metal Trades Department has evolved over the years. Currently, they act as a parent union to 35 metal trades councils throughout the U.S. and Canada. These councils oversee affiliated unions in the manufacturing and production industries. In the past they worked with shipyard workers, especially during wartime.

Current feelings on the Biden administration

Great things are ahead for workers, according to Hart. While President Biden is far from perfect, Hart believes this administration truly has working people in its hearts. Further, he said they have shown a commitment to female workers through pushes for childcare and healthcare.

President Biden is acting like the president others said they would be. While past presidents enjoyed union support and vowed to be a proponent of unions, they did very little to help union members. Hart said President Biden is walking the walk with his support for unions and giving them a seat at the table.

Finally, Hart is optimistic about the PRO Act and believes it will receive the needed support. However, Hart said if past labor laws were enforced or carried harsher penalties, we wouldn’t be in this situation in the first place.
