UAW applauds Biden’s electric vehicle push

The Biden administration has made it clear that they want to initiate a number of clean energy initiatives, including the implementation of electric vehicles.

United Auto Workers Legislative Representative Desiree Hoffman broke down the Build Back Better Act on today’s episode of the AWF Union Podcast. She discussed how consumers will be encouraged to purchase electric vehicles, her confidence in the passage of the Build Back Better Act and more.

Creating the electric vehicle tax credit

Consumers already receive a tax credit for purchasing an electric vehicle, making them more affordable for average consumers. The Build Back Better Act will further expand those credits for those purchasing their electric vehicle from certain makers.

The Build Back Better Act includes a provision that awards a $4,500 tax credit to consumers who purchase an electric vehicle from a company that makes their vehicles in the U.S. and has a union workforce.

Hoffman said foreign electric vehicle manufacturers are lobbying against the credit, saying it creates an unfair advantage. She believes these companies made their decision when they decided where to build their manufacturing facilities.

She said this provision needs to be in the final version of the bill and the UAW will do everything in its power to ensure that it is. It is vital American taxpayers do not subsidize companies who mistreat their workers.

Passing the Build Back Better Act

Hoffman is confident the Build Back Better Act will pass. She said Congressional Democrats need to come together and agree on a final price of the bill. Cutting certain provisions will most certainly hurt middle class Americans.

In terms of the bi-partisan infrastructure bill, Hoffman and the UAW believe it should be passed at the same time as the Build Back Better Act. She fears if one is done without the other, then the remaining bill will be shelved and forgotten.
