U.S. Senator Manchin expected to revisit Build Back Better legislation

Bill Samuel, Government Affairs Director for the AFL-CIO, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss U.S. Senator Joe Manchin’s (D-W. Va.) opposition to the Build Back Better budget reconciliation bill and why he thinks the Senate may make progress toward getting the bill passed next year.

On Dec. 19, Manchin appeared on Fox News Sunday to announce his opposition to the bill, which Samuel said was perplexing. It took people by surprise, as the Senator was deep in negotiations with the White House the week before his announcement. However, Samuel remains confident Manchin will revisit the legislation when the Senate reconvenes after Jan. 3.

AFL-CIO leadership has been in communication with the Senator, and Samuel claimed Manchin has not ruled out the Build Back Better legislation. He actually likes a number of provisions in the bill. At some point, he believes Manchin and the Democrats will iron out their differences.

Samuel also talked about the ambitious agenda of National Labor Relations Board General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo. She is setting a favorable course for organizing and bargaining, including reviewing the decision on whether or not replacing striking workers is legal. It is refreshing that Democrats finally hold a 3-2 majority on the NLRB and are on the side of the workers, he added.
