U.S. can restore greatness and build back better through manufacturing and infrastructure

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the desperate need to reshore manufacturing of certain products. In this case it was personal protective equipment, which is often made overseas at a cheaper rate.

Alliance for American Manufacturing President Scott Paul joined America’s Work Force Union Podcast to explain the importance of American manufacturing and how President-elect Biden can help lead the change.

PPE manufacturing

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a massive shortage of personal protective equipment, leading to hospitals with a shortage in masks, shields, gowns and more.

This gave China a massive upper hand compared to other countries, where it is more expensive to produce the PPE.

The U.S. was forced to buy these products from China. Between the high cost of purchasing them elsewhere and not mass producing them in the U.S., the government was forced to purchase Chinese products.

Build back better

The Biden campaign slogan has become a bit of a rallying cry for the American labor community. The promise is to create good-paying American jobs that provide benefits to families.

Paul said the jobs created during the new administration should be union jobs, in sectors such as infrastructure, clean energy and manufacturing. He added that these jobs will be great for unions as well as the decimated American economy.

Adding these jobs will also separate America from its dependency on China.
