Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO President Larry Willis heavily defended the idea of a mask mandate in certain situations and explained how Joe Biden will handle the COVID-19 crisis if elected on America’s Work Force Union Podcast.
Public transportation mask mandate
Willis has long advocated for a national mask mandate when riding public transportation. The mandate would benefit both workers and passengers. Due to a lack of leadership and an attempt to pass off any responsibilities to state governments, Willis said there is no help in sight for transportation workers.
He said the Transportation Trades Department filed a request to the President asking for a nationwide mask mandate on public transportation. The request cited the safety of workers and passengers.
The timing of the request denial was ironic because it came on the same day President Trump tested positive for COVID-19 and received world-class taxpayer funded healthcare.
A national mask mandate on public transportation would also help the workers who are trying to enforce current, local standards. Willis said workers are being assaulted, mistreated and disrespected for trying to enforce flimsy local regulations.
Joe Biden and the COVID-19 pandemic
Willis said a Biden administration would have handled the COVID-19 pandemic much differently. He said Biden will listen to experts and lead by example in an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19.
He added that Joe Biden will be much better for transportation workers, who will be better represented and protected.
