Transport Workers Union of America International President John Samuelsen joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss what can be done about the epidemic of unruly customer behavior directed at transportation workers.
A hostile environment exists on many of the nation’s buses, trains and airplanes, Samuelsen said. The COVID-19 pandemic, masking requirements and a decline in service quality have created a perfect storm for unruly customer behavior, and transportation workers are bearing the brunt of poor treatment.
Samuelsen called for a federal no fly list to protect transportation workers. Currently, each airline maintains its own list of banned passengers, but the TWA has called for a uniform no fly list orchestrated by the federal government — similar to the Terrorist Watch List. The TWA has discussed the concept with numerous U.S. Representatives, as well as U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. Samuelsen expects movement on the idea to happen within the next couple of months.
He also believes the Thanksgiving holiday will be a stressful time for transportation workers as travel resumes to pre-pandemic levels.
