Trade association says the USMCA has benefited American truckers

The Owner Operated Independent Drivers Association Director of Federal Affairs Jay Grimes explained how American truckers are faring under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on the Sept. 29 episode of America’s Work Force Union Podcast.

Grimes started the segment by explaining who the Owner Operated Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) is. He said it is the largest small business truckers organization in the United States. The organization has over 150,000 drivers operating more than 200,000 vehicles.

As the USMCA was agreed on, truckers have been among the most affected. The USMCA better protects American truckers from statistically more dangerous Mexican truckers.

However, Grimes said the Mexican government is now trying to loosen restrictions, as their truckers are not held to the same safety, training and environmental standards as American truckers.

Finally, Grimes said the USMCA established a review process to set up investigations that may lead to findings of Mexican truckers hurting American truckers economically. Their loose qualifications make them cheaper and more available for certain shipments.
