Theater community fears new wave of shutdowns as pandemic resurges

John Galinac, Business Agent at the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts Local 160, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the stage industry during the latest surge in COVID-19 cases.

The IATSE Local 160 jurisdiction stretches from Sandusky, Ohio into Pennsylvania. Many of the people who work in the industry are greatly concerned about the potential for prolonged shutdowns in the wake of the Delta and Omicron COVID variants, he said. The Cleveland Orchestra recently canceled its holiday concert series due to pandemic concerns and In New York City, Broadway is shutting down plays — a concern many fear will spill into Ohio, he said.

Despite these concerns, there remains widespread vaccine skepticism, even among the membership of IATSE Local 160, Galinac said. Some of their members remain unvaccinated and therefore cannot work because they are restricted from certain assignments. There have been times it has been difficult for the Union to fulfill a call due to a lack of vaccinated members, he added.
