The Nation writer explains how far President Trump can go during an emergency

Jeet Heer of the Nation Magazine spoke with America’s Work Force Radio Podcast on July 16 about his most recent articles.

The Nation MagazineThe first article Heer spoke about addresses Presidential Emergency Action Documents (PEADs). Originally created during the Eisenhower administration, these documents are prepared in case of an emergency, such as a nuclear attack. Also, these are not subject to congressional oversight.

Heer noted that these documents may be used without congressional approval.

Heer then talked about the potential for Pres. Trump to call off the election. Heer said the most likely answer is that he does not have that power. He suggested that Trump may use a PEAD to invoke martial law against those protesting in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Heer then discussed his article “The Left Needs to Reclaim Free Speech.” He spoke about examples for the political left to strengthen their free speech rights and push back against Republicans. One way is to increase union density and limit at-will employment since republicans use union busting as an attack on the left’s freedom of speech.

Another example he gives is to allow public employees to speak on matters of public concern, preventing them from being fired without due process and giving them a chance to respond to charges against them.

United SteelworkersJose Arroyo of the United Steelworkers (USW) spoke about challenges the organization has faced during the pandemic.

He said one of the major issues they faced was the inability to communicate efficiently with each other. Due to social distancing, workers are now separated from each other, or working in different locations all together. Arroyo said this has caused stress on member communication.

Arroyo continued by speaking about the upcoming election and some of the issues resonating with voters.

The ever popular health care cost is at the front of minds due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the amount of people losing their healthcare due to furloughs and job losses, health care costs will play a major factor in the upcoming election.

Lastly, Arroyo explained why blue collar workers and USW members feel betrayed by Pres. Trump after seeing jobs leave many cities.

Laborers International Union of North AmericaAWF Radio Podcast host Ed “Flash” Ferenc spoke about Laborers 773 in Illinois providing 200 boxes of produce and 250 boxes of dairy products to families in need.
