Independent Labor Observer Tom Buffenbarger joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the Great Resignation — the phenomenon where many Americans quit their jobs in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic — and the opportunity it presents to rethink the labor landscape in the U.S.
People are looking for more prosperity and equitable opportunity from their jobs, Buffenbarger said. They do not want to return to the status quo. The recently passed infrastructure bill, as well as the budget reconciliation bill that will soon go before the U.S. Senate, are great opportunities to remake the American economy in a way that is more beneficial to working people. He pointed to a shift of industries, such as the energy industry and other areas where jobs will be created.
He also spoke about a new four-year contract ratified by approximately 280 members of International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 588 who work at Garlock Sealing Technologies in Palmyra, N.Y. The contract provides significant wage increases, a signing bonus, an automatic 2 percent employer contribution for all members to their 401k plan, seven full paid sick days under the New York State Sick Leave policy and improvements to company medical contributions.
