John Russo, a Visiting Scholar at the Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and Working Poor at Georgetown University, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the Great Resignation. He spoke about the reasons why millions of workers in the U.S. are leaving their jobs, either through organized strikes on behalf of labor unions or non-union employees simply walking off the job.
It is a complicated issue driven by the pandemic and its effect on working people, but also years of frustration brought about by low pay, poor benefits and unsuitable working conditions, Russo said.
Unions can take advantage of this opportunity by organizing non-union workers, but unfortunately there are numerous laws and regulations in place that make the struggle an uphill battle, he said.
Since the federal government provides the largest labor force in the country, he expects President Biden will implement pro-union federal policies affecting federal workers that will ripple into the private sector. Unfortunately, President Biden’s hands are currently tied by a split Congress, despite his administration being the most pro-union presidency since FDR, Russo added.
