Teamsters Rep. highlights USMCA trucking dispute

International Brotherhood of Teamsters Legislative Representative Mike Dolan discussed how the Teamsters and American trucking industry are benefitting from the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement on the Aug. 26 episode of America’s Work Force Radio Podcast.

The trucking industry under the USMCA

Although the USMCA has already been negotiated and agreed upon, there are now some disputes regarding the trucking industry.

Dolan said the North American Free Trade Agreement gave up ground for American truckers. He said Mexican trucking companies were given access to United States interstates, creating an unfair advantage for Mexican trucking companies.

Dolan said this is precisely what the Teamsters fought to have corrected in the USMCA. He said that in addition to taking work from American trucking companies, the policy created safety issues on American highways.

Provisions were written into the USMCA to make it more fair for American trucking companies, which the Mexican government now objects to.

Working alongside the Labor Advisory Committee

Dolan said the Teamsters is working closely with the Labor Advisory Committee to ensure American trucking companies are protected under the USMCA. He said members of the committee have stated they are keeping the Teamsters and the entire American trucking industry in mind during these discussions.

He believes the Mexican government waited too long and that this should not even be an issue.
