Teamsters on strike at United Metro Energy

Teamsters at United Metro Energy are on strike because of unfair labor practices. Teamsters Local 553 Secretary-Treasurer and Principal Officer Demos Demopoulos joined the AWF Union Podcast to talk about the strike and how United Metro is pushing back against the union.

Unfair labor practices

Demopoulos said the terminal operators at United Metro Energy were underpaid and their manager refused to meet the industry standard. Since the workers underpaid, they made efforts to bargain for better contracts and management refused.

When the workers demanded better pay in a new contract, United Metro managers used threatening tactics to back down the workers. Demopoulos said managers would fire workers, replace them with scabs and threaten to take away their health benefits; all of which are unfair labor practices.

The Teamsters Local 553 announced their strike and filed an unfair labor practice lawsuit against United Metro Energy. They have the support of the Teamsters International Union and other Teamster Locals in New York.

Demopoulos said they will continue the fight until their workers receive the pay and benefits they deserve, especially in their industry.
