Teamsters Local 777 win wages, benefits for drivers

The transportation industry has been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, including truckers and school bus drivers.

International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 777 President Jim Glimco discussed the impact COVID-19 has had on drivers and two newly ratified contracts on America’s Work Force Union Podcast.

COVID-19 impact on drivers

Every industry has been touched by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the driving industry. Glimco said many Local 777 drivers were sidelined. As the economy slowly began to regain steam, and businesses were opening back up, drivers were able to get back to their routes.

School bus drivers were also sidelined, as many schools have been operating remotely, requiring less drivers. Despite this, those who continued working were exposed to COVID-19 related hazards.

Ratifying contracts

Glimco discussed two collective bargaining agreements reached with First Student, a charter bus company. One of the agreements is nationwide, while the other is a local supplement contract.

In the local supplement contract, new hires can make up to $22.75 per hour. This is an increase from the previous starting wage of $19 per hour. There are also conditions within the contract that will see drivers earn additional money for driving charters of sports teams, church groups and more.

The drivers will be compensated for their drive time as well as their idle time, as they wait for the group to finish what they were driven to do.

The new contracts include added benefits and a retirement plan.
