Binstock spoke about the issue with businesses misclassifying employees as independent contractors so that they do not have to offer health benefits, can pay hourly rates, don’t have to reimburse for business expenses, as well as many other reasons. In return, Binstock discussed how this is unfair for businesses to have their employees sign contracts saying that they are independent contractors to avoid certain expenses. Binstock also talked about how the National Labor Relations Board was put in place for employees to file complaints about job sites, unfair labor practices, contract negotiation complications, and more, and help the employees settle their complaints. He said that around 95 percent of these cases are solved on a local level, and the rest move on to Washington D.C. to be solved.
Cherri Senders, publisher for Labor 411, spoke with AWF on March 7 about unions needing to find and purchase union-made products. Labor 411 and their product directory is used to guide consumers in the right direction to find union-made products for their own consumption or to use as gifts. Senders said that Labor 411 is superior to other union product databases because they update theirs frequently, have a mobile app, and their research to find these union products is incredibly thorough.
