Legislature for the People was the Main Topic of Discussion on America’s Work Force

Communication Workers of America Legislative and Political Director, Shane Larson, spoke about a new piece of legislature that was introduced at the beginning of the year during his time Feb. 12 appearance on America’s Work Force

Communication Workers of AmericaLarson discussed a new piece of legislature called “For the People Act” or H.R. 1 that was introduced in Jan. 2019. H.R. 1 covers big money in politics such as “dark money” and “special interest” money, expanding opportunities for more citizens to be able to participate in future elections. This can be done by making election day a holiday for federal employees and encourages businesses in the private sector to do the same, as well as a wide range of ethical issues. Larson explained that H.R. 1 has been overshadowed and relatively ignored due to the 35 day government shutdown that began in January and is worried that the same thing might happen again with the threat of another government shutdown projected to begin on Feb. 15.

Kris LaGrange UCOMM BlogKris LaGrange, head of UCOMM Communication, spoke about Amazon’s HQ2 in New York City during his time on AWF. He discussed Amazon’s vice president refusal to remain neutral if Amazon’s employees decided they wanted to unionize and how it has created concerns among NYC elected officials. NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio responded to that comment, saying that there will be pressure for Amazon to allow their employees to unionize and that he will also contribute to the pressure put on Amazon.

AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc talked about the Denver teachers strike, which is the first strike in Denver in over 25 years, that was influenced by the pay increase and what they want done with their bonuses.

New Congress Discussed on America’s Work Force

During the Jan. 8 edition of America’s Work Force, Frank Mathews with Communication Workers of America, discussed issues that the new congress will be taking on in 2019.

Mathews talked about the new congress holding big corporations accountable who outsourced jobs after receiving tax cuts. He talked about investigating AT&T and other corporations who took advantage of the tax cuts, who said they will create more jobs, but outsourced them instead. Mathews also talked about more states rising up against So-Called “Right to Work,” specifically in the midwest.

Leonard DiCosimo with the Cleveland Federation of Musicians was also featured on the Jan. 8 edition of AWF. Dicosimo talked about a newly ratified collective bargaining agreement with musicians in the Cleveland Orchestra. These contracts included modest increases in salaries, increased benefits, changed audition policies and a 2 percent increase in weekly compensation. He also talked about the Cleveland Federation of Musicians upcoming plans for 2019.

AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc discussed the ongoing partial government shutdown and people calling their senators asking to not work on any bills that do not deal with the reopening of the government.

Communication Workers of America Administrative District 4 Director Discussed AT&T Jobs on America’s Work Force Radio

Frank Mathews, CWA District 4 Administrative Director, provided an update on AT&T Midwest jobs during his Dec. 11 appearance on America’s Work Force Radio.

Communication Workers of AmericaMathews said AT&T received a tax cut and he hoped they would create more jobs with the extra funds. Instead of creating jobs, AT&T ended up cutting thousands of jobs through offshoring and outsourcing. He then explained the importance of holding corporations accountable for their actions. Mathews spoke about current legislation in Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Dave Wondolowski Cleveland Building and Construction Trades CouncilDave Wondolowski from the Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council joined America’s Work Force Radio and talked about how apprenticeship programs affiliated with the Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council were praised for their high quality of training. He explained the affiliated apprenticeship programs are all self-funded. Wondolowski talked about the recent Cleveland Building Trades Apprenticeship Fair, which had a record turnout, as more than 300 people attended the fair to learn about the opportunities provided by the trades. He also spoke about the importance of enforcing Project Labor Agreements and Prevailing Wage.

Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council Executive Secretary Dave Wondolowski Talked Election Results on America’s Work Force Radio

Dave Wondolowski, Executive Secretary of the Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council, talked about results of the midterm election on America’s Work Force Radio.

He spoke about the republican candidates who won in the election in Ohio and the fate of a So-Called “Right to Work” bill sitting in a lame duck session of Ohio General Assembly.

 

Communication Workers of AmericaFrank Mathews, Administrative Director of the Communications Workers of America District 4, was also a guest on the Nov. 13 show. Mathews was surprised by the high amount of Ohio voters, from both parties, who participated in the election. Prior to the election, he thought 2 million votes for Democratic Party candidate Rich Cordray would have been enough for him to become Ohio’s next governor. Due to the high turnout, the 2 million votes was not enough for Cordray to win. Mathews also discussed certain bills sitting in the General Assembly’s lame duck session such as So-Called “Right to Work”, free speech on college campuses and telecommunication regulations.

 

Show host Ed “Flash” Ferenc discussed how the results of the midterm elections will put power back into the hands of working Americans. He also talked about show regular, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, who is considering a run for the White House in 2020.
