Steelworkers connect with members and employers on infrastructure

The United Steelworkers are rallying around President Biden and his proposed infrastructure plan, the American Jobs Plan. The comprehensive bill includes new construction, renovations, clean energy, enhanced supply chains and more.

Kim Miller, Assistant to United Steelworkers President Tom Conway, explained her role and the importance of the American Jobs Plan on America’s Work Force Union Podcast. She also discussed specific components of the plan that would help steelworkers.

As assistant to USW President Tom Conway, Miller has taken on a role that includes political and legislative work. Currently she is working on the push for the American Jobs Plan by the USW.

Member engagement

Working in the political realm, Miller said it is difficult to avoid the political division that was felt in every corner of the U.S. This left her to devise a plan to get some members onboard with the Biden administration’s plans.

The best way to get members to see the good of President Biden’s plan was to isolate the issues that affect their families and their jobs. Her plan of attack was to focus on labor rights, healthcare, pandemic recovery, pensions, infrastructure and other labor related issues.

The USW’s role in infrastructure

An infrastructure plan has been talked about for decades. However, no previous president has come close to proposing something like the American Jobs Plan. Since many USW members work in supply chain roles, this plan is great.

However, Miller said this plan has to be properly executed in order to bring working people along and create sustainable jobs. The promised jobs cannot be temporary and must be good paying and offer quality benefits.

Finally, Miller discussed We Supply America, a USW effort to connect with members and employers in order to learn their needs. She said they spoke with the membership what needs to be done in terms of infrastructure and then spoke with employers about their needs.
