Shipbuilding workers reject contract, return to the negotiating table

Pat Gallagher, North Coast Area Labor Federation (NCALF), joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the recent rejection of a contract by workers at the Newport News Shipbuilding yard.

The vote to ratify the agreement between USW Local 8888 and Huntington Ingalls Industries was not close, as there were 1,313 “no” votes and 684 “yes” votes, according to Gallagher.

Huntington Ingalls is located in Virginia, a So-Called “Right-to-Work” state, and their five-year offer would have enhanced wages and pensions, while reducing healthcare costs. The USW will now consult with its members to see why they rejected the deal, go back to the bargaining table and find a way to move forward, Gallagher added.

He also spoke about President Biden’s recent agreement with the European Union to ease Trump-era tariffs on aluminum and steel. Hopefully, it will help address China’s global overcapacity in the steel market, he said.

Gallagher also praised the infrastructure bill recently signed by Biden as a once in a lifetime opportunity. He was particularly excited that the legislation mandates only U.S. manufactured steel can be used, a provision written into the law by U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio).
