Senate to consider electric vehicle credits in Build Back Better bill

United Auto Workers (UAW) Legislative Representative Desiree Hoffman joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss tax incentives in the Build Back Better budget reconciliation bill that would encourage the purchase of union-made electric vehicles built in the U.S.

The current budget reconciliation bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives includes a $4,500 electric vehicle tax credit if the purchased vehicle is union-made and manufactured in America. If the battery is made in America, an additional $500 tax credit is available. These tax credits are in addition to the $7,500 tax credit available for simply purchasing an electric vehicle, for a total of $12,500 in tax credits, Hoffman said.

If passed, the bill would create a strong precedent, she said. Once passed, the electric vehicle tax credits would then be reviewed by the Parliamentarian to see if they fall within the scope of budgetary requirements. For this to happen, the tax credits must be agreed on by Democrat Senators, including Sen. Joe Manchin and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema. Manchin, whose state includes a number of Toyota plants, has called the tax credits un-American and wrong, Hoffman said.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Shumer has said he would like to get the legislation passed by Christmas, but Hoffman described that deadline as “ambitious.”
