Roofers Union claims Carpenters Union is encroaching on their work

Roofers Local 65 President Taylor Nelson joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss a jurisdictional dispute between the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers. In short, the Roofers allege the Carpenters are taking their work.

The Carpenters Union has added roofing to their line of work in some jurisdictions and attempted to lure contractors away from the Roofers Union, Nelson said. They have also attempted to poach apprenticeship instructors and other union officials away from the Roofers, Nelson alleged. These efforts have been met with pickets by Local Roofer Unions.

Nelson also spoke about the Roofers apprenticeship program and its efforts to recruit new apprentices in the face of material shortages that have affected work opportunities for their members. The availability of insulation, for example, is currently nine months to one year out, which can make bidding and scheduling difficult, he said.
