As Uber and Lyft completely took over the transportation market, Edan Alva, a driver-leader and organizer with Gig Workers Rising discussed the misclassification of rideshare drivers on America’s Work Force Radio Podcast on Aug. 17.
Gig Workers Rising is an organization fighting against gig economy killing legislation, and fighting for rideshare drivers at companies such as Uber and Lyft.
Alva explained that drivers for these companies have been misclassified as independent contractors. This classification leaves them open to be paid improper wages and not receive healthcare and other benefits.
He said gig workers are pushing hard against Proposition 22 in California. Proposition 22 ensures protections for corporations such as Uber and Lyft. Alva says the companies have gotten away with paying wages as low as $5.64 per hour and proposition would allow them to continue this.
Alva said although the legislation is only a California proposition, it could lead to consequences for gig workers everywhere. Throughout the country these drivers are being misclassified and are missing out on wages and benefits they deserve.
Alva added that the California Labor Federation supports Gig Workers Rising and their mission.
