Republican-controlled state legislatures pass new voting laws

Following the 2020 election, state-level Republicans have passed legislation that Democrats claim limits the ability of voters and undermines elections.

Voting Booth Editor, Chief Correspondent and Senior Writing Fellow Steven Rosenfeld discussed these new laws, why they are being passed and how rhetoric is shaping elections during America’s Work Force Union Podcast.

Preserving power

Rosenfeld said the voting process and how we are counting votes is going in reverse. In an attempt to hold onto power, state politicians are passing voting legislation at a record pace. Rosenfeld said Republican voters make up a minority of voters, but somehow hold supermajorities in many states.

He said the system is set up to make this is possible. Through gerrymandering and other tactics, politicians have essentially chosen their voters.

The 2020 election

President Biden’s victory came as a shock to many Republicans, who believed President Trump would handily win reelection. Voters in swing states came out in force to support Biden, as some independents and Republicans who felt President Trump was too polarizing of a figure.

Despite Rosenfeld’s claim that the 2020 election was secure due to more voters using paper ballots, more recounts and second checks than ever, Republicans are still claiming it was a stolen election and that Democrats cheated.

The issue of voter fraud has become popular among Republicans, to the point where new candidates are running on the issue. This is all smoke and mirrors though, as Rosenfeld believes candidates are just taking advantage of desperate voters for personal gain.

State level politicians, such as those in Arizona, are further taking advantage of the issue by commissioning audits by private companies. Rosenfeld said this is dangerous, as it is giving false hope to voters. He added that the Arizona audit is nothing more than a propaganda campaign.
