Report: States did a poor job of documenting CARES Act expenditures

Good Jobs First Executive Director Greg LeRoy joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss a recent Good Jobs First study documenting how most states did a poor job disclosing how CARES Act funding was spent.

Good Jobs First is a national policy resource organization that tracks federal and state funding and subsidy programs in an effort to promote accountability.

Passed in the later days of the Trump Administration, the CARES Act provided states over $150 billion in COVID-19 relief. Spending guidelines were loose, with funds being used for anything virus related, including medical supplies, essential worker bonuses, hospital equipment, etc. However, the report found only 16 states adequately documented how the money was spent, he said.

LeRoy also spoke about the $669 billion in tax subsidies Amazon received in 2021, much of which was used to expand warehouse facilities. Amazon’s business model of making faster delivery a priority depends on warehouse expansion. LeRoy questioned why the public is essentially paying the company to make expansions it naturally needs to be successful.
