President Biden’s American Rescue Plan excites labor groups and workers alike

As the Biden administration gains time under its belt, it is moving forward with its pro-labor promises. Additionally, the administration is showing it is willing to work to pass a new relief plan.

AFL-CIO Government Affairs Director Bill Samuel discussed how the Biden administration is moving forward and helping workers on AWF Union Podcast. Samuel also discussed the Biden administration COVID-19 relief plan and how it will help workers.

Pro-labor NLRB

Under the previous administration, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) was stacked with corporate sympathizers and known union busters. Samuel said the Biden administration is doing what it can to turn the tides in favor of workers.

The current makeup of the NLRB is two Republicans and three Democrats. He said this Democratic majority will serve well for the union community, collective bargaining and is expected to side with workers in many cases.

Samuel said this change is great for workers, especially union members, who were largely ignored by the previous board and whose cases were typically thrown out.

American Rescue Plan

Samuel showed excitement for the American Rescue Plan, which will receive a House of Representatives vote on Feb. 26.

In addition to containing funding for COVID-19 relief such as vaccine distribution plans, stimulus checks and more, the bill addresses crucial pro-worker matters. He said the bill will include a progressive minimum wage increase, pension protection and more.

Samuel is confident the bill will pass with bipartisan support. However, Democrats will face troubles regarding the minimum wage hike. Republicans have largely condemned the plan.

Recovery package

Samuel also discussed a plan set for further down the road that includes funding for a multitude of issues.

This multi-trillion dollar recovery package is said to include more stimulus money, further pension protections, infrastructure funding and more.

Samuel said he looks forward to the recovery package, as infrastructure funding is desperately needed and a plan to rebuild would give unions the opportunity to show off their abilities.
