President Biden signs executive order requiring taxpayer funded purchases to be American-made

The Biden administration began their government by issuing a flurry of executive orders addressing problems that have been kicked down the road from administration to administration.

International Brotherhood of Teamsters Trade Policy Specialist Mike Dolan explained why the “Buy American” executive order is good for workers and what more needs to be done to benefit American workers on America’s Work Force Union Podcast.

Buy American executive order

Dolan said the executive order ensures that federal tax dollars are spent on American-made goods. The belief is that if the federal government is spending on American-made goods, the private sector will follow suit.

He said the executive order is not enough. Congress needs to act to close loopholes created by the Government Procurement Agreement. The agreement is under the World Trade Organization and oversees the purchase of goods by member nations.

Additionally, Dolan said President Biden is already working to shore up the order by establishing a specific office dedicated to the recording and tracking of federal purchases. This office will help streamline the logistics of any purchases.

Finally, Dolan urged Congress to work to extend the order to the service industry as well, where many union members work.
