President Biden moving quickly on labor-friendly legislation

President Biden and Congressional Democrats are working quickly to get as much done with the majority they currently hold. President Biden is fast tracking campaign promises, making good on key issues.

Laborers International Union of North America General President Terry O’Sullivan joined AWF Union Podcast to discuss the American Rescue Plan, the American Jobs Plan and other legislation that pertains to workers.

Before discussing legislation, O’Sullivan applauded former Boston Mayor and Laborer Marty Walsh on being confirmed as Secretary of Labor.

The American Rescue Plan

O’Sullivan thanked Senator Sherrod Brown for his dedication to multiemployer pension plans and never letting the issue down. He even called him a champion for his efforts on the inclusion of more than $80 million in funding for the plans.

The effort protects pensioners everywhere. The aging workforce has caused the plans to struggle for a number of years, but help has finally arrived.

American Jobs Plan

O’Sullivan looked ahead to the possibility of infrastructure legislation titled the American Jobs Plan. The legislation is estimated to create 18 million good paying jobs.

Labor leaders throughout the country are impressed by the plan and are encouraging its passage. He said it is nice to have a president who has shown and discussed a legitimate infrastructure plan.

O’Sullivan also said he finds it encouraging that President Biden is willing to work with those on the other side of the aisle to get something done on a bipartisan basis. However, it is very likely an infrastructure plan will receive no Republican support in the Senate.

Passing the PRO Act

O’Sullivan said the PRO Act and labor law reform has been in the works for years now. The PRO Act has gained steam after passing through the House of Representatives with bipartisan support. He is confident that Majority Leader Schumer and President Biden will be able to sway all Democrats and even some Republicans to support the legislation in the Senate.
