Passage of the American Rescue Plan provides much needed relief

After almost a full year in a pandemic, there has finally been a relief package passed. United Auto Workers Legislative Representative Desiree Hoffman joined the AWF Union Podcast to break down some of the points listed in this package.

American Rescue Plan

The desperately needed American Rescue Plan was passed and offers much-needed relief to the U.S. One thing that was included in the package was extended unemployment benefits. Thousands of people lost their jobs due to the pandemic and have been collecting unemployment benefits for months to keep themselves afloat and the passage of the bill extends the duration that they can collect said benefits.

A $1,400 stimulus check was also included in the package. Just like the unemployment benefits, the stimulus check is meant to help Americans who are behind on bills or rent.

Hoffman also mentioned that state and local governments will receive aid. Since the beginning of the pandemic, businesses and local governments were struggling to stay alive and finally after almost a full year of waiting, they will receive aid.

PRO Act

The Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act passed in the House of Representatives and is currently sitting with the Senate. Hoffman added that it took a lot of revising and fighting to get it to where it is now and is confident it will be passed in the Senate.
