Pandora Papers reveal how ultra rich hide money in tax havens

Chuck Collins, Contributor to The Nation, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the Pandora Papers, described as “the Panama Papers on Steroids.” Released earlier this month, the report shows how the U.S. is a major tax haven and destination for illicit wealth.

Collins’ article, “The Pandora Papers Reveal How the Super-Rich Shaft the Rest of Us,” was published in The Nation earlier this month. The Pandora Papers are based on numerous leaks from offshore financial firms and detail how the wealthy hide their money. The report also demonstrates the U.S. is one of the largest tax havens in the world, Collins said.

Tax dodging opportunities for the rich have grown so prevalent in the last 20 years. For the wealthy, paying taxes has essentially become optional, he added.

If President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda is ever expected to pay for itself, U.S. tax loopholes will need to be plugged, Collins said. If these loopholes are not closed, the burden falls on the poor and the middle class.
