OPCMIA uses virtual reality to teach plaster and cement trades

Operative Plasterers’ and Cement Masons’ International Association (OPCMIA) International Representative Joe Ciacchi joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the use of virtual reality technology in OPCMIA training programs.

The OPCMIA invested in virtual reality technology to allow students to observe and experience various types of plaster and cement work in a realistic setting, Ciacchi said. Virtual reality training has proved highly effective in providing realistic experiences that give students a taste for the work, he added.

Ciacchi then spoke about the OPCMIA ITF training programs. The registered apprenticeship programs offered by the OPCMIA ITF are three to four years in length, depending on trade and location. The programs are college accredited.

Lastly, Ciacchi discussed the infrastructure bill and how it will create great demand in the plaster and cement industries. The economy is robust, and the job market is booming, he said. Ciacchi urged anyone interested in an apprenticeship to contact their Local Union.
