Ohio’s redistricting process heavily favors Republican representation

Pat Gallagher, United Steelworkers District 1 Director, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss alleged gerrymandering of new redistricting maps in the state of Ohio. The case is currently before the Ohio Supreme Court.

Despite the fact Republicans maintain a voter majority of 55 percent in Ohio, Ohio’s redistricted maps grant the party a super majority, he said. In the latest census, Ohio lost a congressional seat. The proposed maps allow for 13 likely Republican districts and two likely Democratic, altered from the current status of 12 Republican districts and four Democratic districts.

Rep. Marcy Kaptur (OH-9) will see her district pushed west to the Indiana border in an area that predominantly votes Republican. The Ohio Redistricting Commission, which has a Republican majority, continues to shape the district maps for Republican political gain, Gallagher said.

He also talked about the loss of manufacturing jobs in the U.S. following China’s admission into the World Trade Organization (WTO) 20 years ago. Since its joining the WTO, China has violated numerous rules and the U.S. has gained little advantage from its inclusion. The U.S. steel industry, in particular, has suffered due to China’s dominance of the global steel market, he said.
