Ohio Consumers’ Counsel Senior Outreach and Education Program Specialist Andrew Tinkham spoke with the AWF Union Podcast about energy saving tips for the holiday season and the Winter Reconnect Crisis Program.
Holiday light energy saving tips
With the holiday season in full swing, consumers are putting up decorations and light displays to celebrate the season. Tinkham suggests switching to LED light bulbs, which are energy efficient and can save consumers on their electricity bills. Not only are the LED bulbs more energy efficient, Tinkham also said they are higher quality and will last longer. By having longer lasting bulbs that are higher quality, consumers are saving money from not purchasing bulbs as frequently.
Winter reconnect crisis program
Every year, thousands of people struggle to pay their bills and this year is no exception. Adding the pandemic and people losing their jobs, ultimately struggling financially, consumers are more under pressure than usual, regarding paying their bills.
Tinkham spoke about the Winter Reconnect Order which is a crisis program for consumers that are struggling to pay their utility bills. With harsh winters in Ohio, heat is essential. A consumer getting disconnected from their gas company during the winter is incredibly dangerous and the Winter Reconnect Order helps people keep their gas utility.
For $175, a consumer who is below the federal income guideline qualifies for the crisis program and will keep their utilities connected during the winter.
Tinkham also provided updates on the Ohio House Bill 6.
