Ohio Consumers Council specialist tells listeners how to cut their power bill

Energy production is a hot topic in Ohio due to legislation being passed and the jobs that it affects. Ohio Consumers Counsel Senior Outreach and Education Program Specialist Andrew Tinkham appeared on AWF Union Podcast to discuss this legislation and how people can save power at home.

Energy legislation leads to trouble in Ohio

In Ohio, legislation was passed to provide funding to two nuclear power plants that have been operating in an uneconomical fashion.

Tinkham said criminal activity surrounds the legislation, as some legislators and lobbyists have been indicted on racketeering and money laundering charges surrounding the legislation. The energy company who owns the plants was accused of offering bribes to politicians and lobbyists.

Tinkham said the legislation is now in trouble, as there are companion bills drafted to repeal the legislation that passed before the criminal activity was discovered.

He added that the Ohio Consumers Counsel is in support of overturning the subsidies.

Helping homeowners save money

Tinkham said that many homeowners do not know how to make their homes more efficient and drop their power bill.

He reminded listeners that even though an appliance is off, it still uses energy if plugged in. Although it is a very small amount of energy being lost, it is still money you can cut off your electric bill.
