Melissa Cropper, President of the Ohio Federation of Teachers joined the Dec. 15 edition of the America’s Work Force Union Podcast.
President Cropper covered topics including Ohio Senate Bill 17, fair funding for schools in Ohio, the negative effects of public school vouchers on Ohio schools and COVID-19 vaccinations for teachers.
Ohio Senate Bill 17
The COVID-19 pandemic has made it incredibly difficult for schools to resume their normal operations with all of the extra safety requirements. Aside from the large efforts to keep the schools clean and safe for students, teachers, and staff, there is an issue with funding. Schools have had trouble receiving the necessary funding to keep schools in operation.
Cropper said that during the pandemic, the Ohio Senate passed a bill allowing teachers to carry a firearm in school with loose requirements on training. This is a slap in the face to schools as they have been struggling and begging for help, and then the Ohio Senate passed an unnecessary and dangerous bill.
Private school vouchers
Cropper has previously discussed private school vouchers and how they are damaging to school districts. Today, she referenced Ohio school districts in Cleveland Heights and University Heights. Private school vouchers take approximately nine million dollars out of the school system in those districts which in turn damages their school funding.
Lastly, Cropper explained to listeners where teachers fall on the ranks for the COVID-19 vaccination.
