State and local governments have been left with massive deficits due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the ongoing election, New York hopes help is on the way.
New York State AFL-CIO Chief of Staff Ryan Delgado explained what they are looking for in terms of pandemic safety and relief for New York workers, how to fix pandemic induced deficits and more on America’s Work Force Union Podcast.
Pandemic safety and relief
Delgado said next to nothing has been done on the federal level to increase the safety of those who are working on the frontlines of the pandemic. He hopes this will change if Joe Biden is elected president.
The New York State AFL-CIO is hoping that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will be forced to bring safety legislation to the floor if Biden wins.
Additionally, there has been no effort to provide relief for those who are out of work due to the pandemic. If Biden is elected, there is hope that the HEROES Act or a similar bill will be agreed upon and passed.
How to fix pandemic induced deficits
New York and other states are facing massive deficits due to the lack of federal aid to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Recovering from this will be a multifaceted fix.
Delgado offered a few potential fixes, including a small temporary tax increase on wealthier residents, increased federal aid and potentially introducing revenue generating industries such as marijuana.
