NCOSH official and former UAW official discusses returning to work in unsafe conditions

Peter Dooley of the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health discussed safely returning to work with America’s Work Force Radio Podcast on Aug. 4.

Dooley began the segment by discussing a new tribute video dedicated to the workers who have lost their lives due to preventable accidents at work. The video and corresponding campaign seeks to highlight a greater need for safety training.

As more people are heading back to work, he discussed a new report that explains how workers can safely return to work amidst a pandemic.

With more people returning to work, Dooley said more will be exposed to COVID-19. He called for greater protections in place for those returning to work.

What are unions doing

The conversation shifted to the presence of unions during the pandemic.

As the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been absent, unions have attempted to fill the gap.

Without enforcement from OSHA, unions are stepping up their protections for members. From providing masks to utilizing hotlines, unions have been doing their best to protect their members.

Finally, Dooley spoke about the essential worker Bill of Rights. This is a set of fundamental protections to keep workers safe. It also includes the need for adequate training to educate workers about avoidable dangers.
