More women are enrolling in registered apprenticeship programs

Plumbers Local 55 President Doreen Cannon joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the unique opportunities union apprenticeships offer women. She also discussed how union officials are changing their approach to make a career in the trades more appealing to women.

Cannon appeared on the show as part of the AWF salute to National Apprenticeship Week.

Women make up a small percentage of the union construction trades workforce, but the number is growing, Cannon said. When she started an apprenticeship, the national average for females in the construction workforce was 2 percent. Today, it has doubled to around 4 percent. Until recently, many women have not viewed the trades as a viable career option. The stigma is being broken down as more women get into the trades, she added.

Though a registered apprenticeship program can be a viable alternative to a traditional college degree, they can be just as challenging, Cannon said. Ideal apprenticeship candidates should be able to follow through on commitments and be ready to learn.
