Mich. LEO official on how Michigan is handling COVID-19 in the workplace

With COVID-19 cases on the rise throughout much of the country, Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity Deputy Director Sean Egan spoke about how Michigan is handling recent outbreaks on America’s Work Force Union Podcast.

Worker safety in Michigan

Egan said the executive orders put in place by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer were struck down by the state Supreme Court.

The court’s ruling opened up the door for MIOSHA to develop their own rules for employers to provide a safe workplace for their employees.

Since mid-October, Michigan employers are required to develop plans to categorize all workers based on their risk of COVID-19 exposure. They also must practice daily health screenings, provide face coverings for employees and outline situations in which they are required to wear the face coverings.

Furthermore, the construction and restaurant industries are subject to additional rules and protections.

MIOSHA is watching as these new rules have taken effect and are working with employers to help them be compliant before issuing fines. These fines are for blatant violations and can reach up to $7,000.

In an attempt to limit spread in other states, MIOSHA is working with other state OSHA plans to help them develop similar guidelines.

Egan concluded his segment by stating that cases are on the rise, especially in the workplace. He said people need to be responsible and stay out of the workplace if they are sick.
