Mechanical insulation is our most effective tool to fight climate change

Mechanical Insulators Labor Management Cooperative Trust (LMCT) Executive Director Pete Ielmini joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the role of mechanical insulation in the fight against climate change.

Energy efficiency will play a fundamental role in the economy over the next 50 years, and mechanical insulation will be critical to that struggle, Ielmini said. According to a national study, all buildings in the U.S. are missing 10 to 30 percent of the mechanical insulation needed to be considered energy efficient.

The biggest challenge faced by the industry is to get people to realize the importance of mechanical insulation, the role it plays in energy efficiency and its effectiveness to reduce the nation’s carbon footprint, he said.

It will be a major undertaking to provide the nation’s buildings with proper mechanical insulation, which will require an expanded workforce of Mechanical Insulators. Recruiting more apprentices is the best way to prepare, Ielmini added.
