Lawsuit contends Ohio’s school voucher system unconstitutional

Independent Media Institute Chief Correspondent Jeff Bryant joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss a lawsuit filed by a coalition of 100 schools in Ohio claiming the state’s school voucher system is unconstitutional because it takes money away from public education.

Under Ohio’s school voucher program, students can get tax-funded vouchers to pay for their education at a charter school. As a result, the public school the child formerly attended loses out on funding from the state. Plaintiffs in the lawsuit contend this deprives the public school of critical funding, and severely weakens the quality of education provided, Bryant said. Charter schools lack some of the accountability public schools must follow and are often low quality, he added.

Ohio’s voucher system stretches public schools to the breaking point, Bryant said. Though the lawsuit is unprecedented, it is reasonable to doubt the constitutionality of Ohio’s voucher program because it takes money away from public schools and impacts the quality of education they provide, he added.

Bryant also talked about community schools, a concept where public school districts provide for the needs of a community, in addition to an education. Under this concept, schools offer services such as nursing, healthcare, food pantries and other community needs, he explained. He pointed to one Florida school district that installed street lights so students could more safely walk to school.
