Labor unions invest in personalized apps for improved communication

With the help of technology companies and union savvy entrepreneurs, products and services are being made available to help improve union member communication.

Greg McHale joined the AWF Union Podcast to introduce a mobile application designed for unions and union members. McHale is the founder of the Union Strong App, an app that allows Local Unions to stay better connected to their members.

The importance of a specialized application

McHale said social media no longer cuts it when it comes to member communication. Only about 2 to 5 percent of social media posts are seen, making the need for more direct communication important.

Union Strong offers a private network for those using the app. Every Local Union can have their own network, making sensitive information on other Local Union pages more private. The private network helps Local Unions host conversations they may not be able to openly have in less secure spaces.

Each Local Union has their own tag within the app. An even further breakdown will show tags for categories such as journeymen and apprentices. Thanks to this tagging system, journeymen can scroll news vital to them, while avoiding news for apprentices.

Relentless innovation

McHale described his team’s efforts as “relentless innovation.” The app is still young and more features are being added as they are developed. The app has the capability to handle Local Unions of all sizes and is entirely customizable.

Local Unions are looking for ways to make the app their own, which is where the Your App feature comes into play. It allows Local Unions to create something entirely their own. For instance, a Local Union can include their own branding, which in turn, will create a more professional look.

McHale said this option is more expensive, but has been popular among larger Local Unions seeking to create something entirely their own.
