Labor leaders push for American made provision in infrastructure bill

With labor-friendly majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, many labor leaders are confident that President Biden will be able to sign labor law reforms as well as an infrastructure bill.

United Steelworkers District 1 Director Pat Gallagher explained the importance of passing the PRO Act and what the Goodyear Tire and Cooper Tire merger means for workers on America’s Work Force Union Podcast.

Goodyear Tire and Cooper Tire merge

Gallagher discussed the merger between the tire manufacturers, saying this merger is a good one.

Sometimes, a merger between manufacturers can lead to the consolidation of production facilities, leading to job cuts and layoffs. Gallagher said these two companies compliment each other well, so there should be no reason to close facilities.

Passing an infrastructure bill

Gallagher said things sound good for the passage of an infrastructure bill. With Democrats in total control and President Biden making infrastructure a signature campaign goal, labor leaders expect this goal to be achieved.

He said that the legislation needs to be done properly, with no loopholes. There are plenty of American manufacturers that much of the materials can be purchased from, further stimulating the domestic economy.

Passing the PRO Act

Gallagher echoed the sentiments of countless labor leaders, who wish to see labor law reform through the passage of the PRO Act.

He explained how employers work with groups like the Chamber of Commerce to set policy in a direction that benefits employers and leaves workers in the dust. Making it easier for workers to organize would begin to level the playing field for the working class.
