David Leshtz, a contributor to the Nation Magazine, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the John Deere strike and the overwhelming support the local community has given to striking workers.
Leshtz recently contributed an article to the Nation detailing the strike and the workers’ rejection of two-tier system pay.
There has been a disconnection between union leadership and what employees truly want, Leshtz said regarding contract negotiations. He noted the company’s first offer was rejected by an overwhelming 90 percent, and the next offer came closer, but was rejected by 55 percent. The workers are not happy with a confusing classification of supplemental employees and pay raises. John Deere originally offered a mere 5 percent pay raise despite record breaking profits that led to the CEO getting a 160 percent pay raise.
Leshtz spoke about the overwhelming support from the community, as many local community members and other labor unions donated food to the striking workers. Local stores even offered discounts to striking members as a show of support.
