Infrastructure bill will increase passenger rail, broadband in Ohio

Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council Executive Secretary-Treasurer Dorsey Hager joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the recently signed infrastructure bill, particularly as it pertains to expanding Amtrak and broadband internet capabilities.

Hager noted a recent visit by Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh to United Association Local 189 in Columbus, to tour a facility and tout the importance of the infrastructure bill and what it will mean for union workers.

Hager is particularly excited about provisions in the bill that will expand Amtrak coverage, including a line between Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati. Having an adequate passenger railway connecting major cities in Ohio will help alleviate some congestion problems, Hager said.

Provisions to increase broadband internet access will go a long way toward eliminating the digital divide, especially in rural areas, he said. Bridging this divide will bring educational and economic benefits to the state, and make Ohio a more attractive location for technology companies, he added.

Lastly, Hager spoke about the Driving Futures program, which helps provide training to economically disadvantaged individuals. The program helps prepare these individuals for good paying careers as truck drivers, with starting pay around $65,000.
